Why was I charged a cryptocurrency fee?

Important! This fee is not charged by Axi. It’s a standard fee that goes to the cryptocurrency network (like Bitcoin or Ethereum) to help send your crypto safely and securely.

What is a cryptocurrency network fee?

A network fee (sometimes called a gas fee, miner fee, or transaction fee) is a standard charge you pay when you send or withdraw cryptocurrency.

It’s how you pay the blockchain to handle your transaction. It helps cover the cost of moving your crypto from one place to another on the blockchain (which is the system that runs cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin).

📌 This fee doesn’t go to Axi, your wallet, or any exchange.
It goes to the people or computers (called miners or validators) that help run the network and process your transaction.

Why do I have to pay this fee?

There are three main reasons:

  1. Your transaction gets confirmed
    • The network uses the fee to process and complete your transfer.
  2. The network stays safe and prevent spam
    • Without fees, the network could be flooded with fake or spam transactions.
  3. To improve speed (so your transfer can go faster)
    • Paying a higher fee can help your transaction get confirmed faster, especially when the network is busy.

Who receives the fee?

The fee is sent to the network, not Axi. It goes to the people or systems that help confirm your transaction:

  • Miners (for systems like Bitcoin)
  • Validators (for newer systems like Ethereum 2.0)

They make sure your transaction is added securely to the blockchain.

Why does the fee amount change?

The amount you are charged depends on:

  • Network congestion: When many users are transacting at once, fees increase. In other words, if a lot of people are sending crypto at the same time, fees can be higher; If it’s a quiet time, fees are usually lower.
  • Blockchain type: Some networks have naturally higher or lower fees.

How can I pay less in fees?

Here are two tips to help reduce network fees:

Send during off-peak times

  • Fees tend to be lower during weekends or late-night hours (UTC). The network is usually less busy.

Use a cheaper network (if available)

  • Some cryptocurrencies can be transferred using different networks.
  • Always double-check that the network is supported before making a transfer, as using the wrong one could result in an irretrievable loss of funds.

💡 Example

Let’s say you send 0.1 BTC, and the network fee is 0.0002 BTC:

  • The person you’re sending to will receive 0.0998 BTC
  • This amount (0.0998 BTC) goes directly to Bitcoin miners
  • Axi does not receive this fee.
